AIRTEL JAMBOREE 2019

by group 4, on 23rd October 2019

On the 18th of this month, one of airtel’s outlet held a yearly give-away event called Jamboree where free Sims are shared and small gifts are handed out by the store’s staff members. It was organised at 109 mushin road, Isolo Lagos. According to our source, who is one of the staff members working for the store, the event didn’t kick off until a short meeting with their supervisor from Airtel headquarters was held. According to my source he said a brief word of encouragement to the staff, and provided a carton of indomine, packet of biro, and 3 rolls of tomato paste sachet which were the gifts handed out to those who registered for the free sim.

The event officially began at 9:00am and a group of canvassers which consisted of musicians, dancers, and an announcer were invited to host and draw in a crowd. The street was lively with music and a lot of people were drawn in by the marketing strategy, the staff members and canvassers all adorned the Airtel shirt.

Airtel Jamboree is an event held every year and it’s aim is to meet up with a sale target. Each Airtel outlet needs to sell 400 Sims a month so this event was organised as a marketing strategy.

The event is hosted in front of the shop with table and chairs beneath an umbrella. 2 staff member we’re seated beneath the umbrella to attend to people interested in the free sim.

According to our source, whenever a customer registers for the free sim, he/she needs to buy Airtel credit ranging from 100 naira to 1000 naira. Bunmi says, “the gifts to be shared are limited in number so each customer must pick a folded piece of paper from a raffle-drop, if a customer picks a paper with the name indomie he/she gets a one indomie. But if they pick “try again later”, they get nothing.”

But since most customers picked “try again”, the staff members changed their tactic and decided to hand out the free gifts to anyone who buys 200 naira credit instead.

The event ended by 6:30pm in the evening and picked up the next day, Saturday, with a large crowd appearing in the evening time due to the downpour of rain that morning.
